At the Flanagan and Gerard Foundation, we are committed to making a lasting impact on the lives of South Africa’s most vulnerable children. We are proud to partner with Isithembiso Babies Home, a registered non-profit organisation in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, that has been a beacon of hope for abandoned, abused, neglected, or orphaned babies (newborn to 3 years) since 2005.

A Sanctuary for the Vulnerable

Founded by Fred Sematimba and Brad Verreynne, Isithembiso Babies Home is now guided by a dedicated leader devoted to its mission of fostering hope and transformation. Operating two intimate homes, each caring for up to 6 babies, Isithembiso ensures individualized attention for a total of 12 children at a time. This small-scale model prioritises personalised care during the critical first five years, when 90% of a child’s brain development occurs. A team of specialists, including paediatricians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and dietitians support each child’s physical, emotional, and cognitive growth. Collaborating with the Department of Social Development, social workers, and courts, Isithembiso facilitates rigorous foster care, adoption, or family reunification processes.

Since its founding, the organisation has cared for over 250 babies, achieving 9 adoptions, 5 foster placements, and 1 family reunification last year alone.
